Stock trading

Trading is the Wall Street term for buying or selling stocks. There are a huge number of stocks traded every day, and the details of how each transaction takes place are quite complex. But for our purposes we don’t need to know all that. New investors or traders should have a basic understanding of how these markets work. The main thing to remember is that trades are done on the exchange electronically or through a full-service broker.

Demystifying markets

When beginners think of the stock markets, they imagine stock market traders screaming and trying to get their orders out. This picture is more true of the past, when many more orders were placed on the floor. Nowadays, many more transactions are done electronically than through a broker. In the past, when you placed an order with a broker over the phone. The broker sent the order to the floor clerk. The clerk would then go to the traders on the floor dealing with the stock you want to buy and then place the order. The trader and the clerk would shake hands on the price and the transaction was considered complete. The clerk tells the broker that your order has been filled and your broker tells you.

Internet brokers

So who needs brokers these days? You just need a computer, right? Well, you don’t need a full-service broker. But you need access to an online broker. These companies place electronic orders for you. It is a fast, efficient and cheap way of trading. Most people prefer online trading for these reasons, and you can’t blame them.

Trading stocks for profit is not just about clicking a few buttons and placing trades. You should research stocks, study price charts and stick to your basic trading strategies.
